The Jug Cup Q&A
Q. Who is eligible to join ‘The Jug Cup’?
The Jug Cup is open to all Novice climbers who are residents of Malaysia! For this competition, we are defining that as climbers who have never reached the finals or secured a podium position in any previous individual climbing competitions (This includes Youth Categories).
That said, we’ve spoken to the other gyms around us and have made exemptions this year specifically for the following competitions;
-
War Of The Walls (Camp5)
-
Battle Of The Boulders (Camp5)
-
BHub Boulder Bash (BHub)
Please note that National status climbers current or past are ineligible to compete regardless of their competition results!
Oh no! I’ve already signed up but I’m ineligible!
Don’t worry! We got you! Let us know by contacting us at hello@bumpbouldering.com. You are welcome to come get your event shirt and pick up a dummy scorecard to enjoy the quali routes! We only ask that you give way to competitors!
Q. I’ve signed up just for the shirt… is that ok?
Perfectly fine! 😀 Come grab your shirt and if you don’t want to compete no biggie! Empty scorecards will be redacted from the rankings so there’s no harm and no foul!
Q. How does the competition work?
Participants will compete in two rounds of carnival-style qualification routes, where the top 8 male and female competitors with the highest number of tops completed in the shortest duration will advance to an IFSC-concurrent style finals!
Q. How do the qualifiers work?
Participants will have to go through 2 rounds of qualification routes – 10 routes at our Jaya One branch, and another 10 routes at our Pavilion Bukit Jalil branch for each qualifying week.
Participants will be given their scorecard at each branch, where they have to either score themselves or get a peer to score them completing each route (i.e., reach the ‘Top’ hold).
*Scorecards may only be collected and submitted once per qualification round.
Participants will then be ranked based on the total number of tops and the duration it takes them to complete the routes. In the event of a tie breaker of tops, the duration (𝙞.𝙚., 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙙, 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙙) will determine their ranking.
Q. How do the Finals work?
The Jug Cup Finals will follow an IFSC Concurrent Format, where all 8 finalists will attempt Problem 1 one at a time. Once all finalists have completed Problem 1, they will proceed to Problem 2, continuing in this sequence.
Prior to the competition, all finalists will participate in a 2-minute observation of each problem. Afterward, they will return to the isolation zone until it’s time to compete.
Each finalist will have 4 minutes to complete each route, with scoring based on the number of Tops, Zones, Attempts to Top, and Attempts to Zone.
Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 male and female competitors, courtesy of BUMP and our sponsors!
Q. What are the prizes?
1st Place: 6-Months Membership + Sponsored Prizes!
2nd Place: 3-Months Membership + Sponsored Prizes!
3rd Place: 10-Day Pass + Sponsored Prizes!
2nd and 3rd will be awarded trophies and 1st place gets The Jug Cup!
Q. When will the qualification routes be up?
Qualification Routes will be up and ready before 7pm on Monday, 𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐨𝐯 (Jaya One) & 𝟏𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐨𝐯 (PBJ). You may choose to pick up your scorecard to compete on that day if you wish.
Q. What does ‘I can practice at any time I want mean during the qualifications?’
Participants are welcome to work on the beta of each qualification route at any time during the week, but can only choose 𝐨𝐧𝐞 of the five designated qualification days to collect their scorecard and officially compete.
You can practice as much as you like but do be aware that during the competition scoring window between 7pm-10pm that competitors (wearing the orange wrist bands have right of way!).**
*Note: Keep in mind that many participants might also choose to compete later in the week (e.g., Thursday or Friday), which could impact the 'duration' factor affecting your final ranking! 😮
**Ammended Nov 11 - Many of you have pointed out the old condition severely disadvantages working class climbers and we agree!
Q. What does ‘shortest duration’ during the qualifiers mean?
The term "shortest duration" refers to the time taken from when you collect your scorecard at the front counter until you submit it. This duration is crucial because, in the event of a tie in the number of tops achieved, the duration will determine the final ranking!
For example; if Competitor A completes 8 routes in 1 hour and 15 minutes, they will be ranked higher than Competitor B, who completed 8 routes in 2 hours.
Q. Why are the qualifiers on weekdays and not on weekends? 😭
We've chosen not to hold the qualification rounds on weekends to ensure proper staffing and maintain a safe competition environment.
Weekends are typically very busy with newcomers and first-time visitors, which could create challenges in managing the competition and ensuring a secure and comfortable atmosphere for all participants!
Q. What grades should I be climbing to compete?
There isn't a single right answer to this, as there will be a balanced mix of easy and challenging routes designed for everyone to learn and enjoy! Expect to encounter some jugs and slopers—let's see what our setters have in store for us!
Q. Does the registration for The Jug Cup include a day pass?
The registration fee for The Jug Cup does not cover any day pass or rental fees... BUT the 16 finalists will compete FOC on the day of the finals!
Q. What time will the finals be held?
The Finals will take place at our Jaya One branch on;
Saturday, November 30th, starting at 2 PM.
Finalists are required to arrive at the Jaya One branch by 12 PM for registration and the final briefing, followed by isolation!
Q. Can visitors watch the Finals?
Absolutely! We warmly invite all of you to come and cheer on your fellow climbers during the finals! We can't wait to experience the fun and lively atmosphere as our finalists compete for the title of The Jug Cup Champion!
Additionally, we’ll be hosting a ‘sponsors bazaar’ featuring booths from all six of our sponsors, showcasing and selling their fantastic products. Don’t miss out on the excitement!
Q. Is it possible to buy ‘The Jug Cup’ tee and not compete?
Absolutely! After the competition, we will have 'The Jug Cup' tees available for purchase at our pro shop, located at the front counter of both gyms. Be sure to grab one!
